Cruise the mekong delta

Can Tho is 170 km from Saigon.. The city, with an estimated population of 1,121,000 (2004), is the biggest city in the Mekong Delta. It is 138.960 ha.The city is located on the south bank of Hau Giang, the bigger branch of the Mekong River. Can Tho’s climate is tropical and monsoonal with two seasons: rainy (May to November) and dry (December to April). Average annual humidity is 83 percent, rainfall 1,635 mm, and temperature 27 °C.

Vietnam has two big deltas, the Red River delta in the North, and the Mekong in the South (this Mekong delta region is formed by the various tributaries of the mighty Mekong River which begins its journey to the sea in Tibet and winds its way for 4500 km through China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Southern Vietnam). Mekong is Cuu Long in Vietnamese which means "nine dragons" and this is represented by the nine exit points of the Mekong River as it flows into the sea. , it produces enough rice to feed the entire country with a sizeable surplus leftover.

Since the beginning, Can Tho was already given the title Tay Do or Western Capital. Administratively, Can Tho City constitutes an independent municipality at the same level as Vietnam’s provinces. It was created in the beginning of 2004 by a split of the former Can Tho Province into two new administrative units: Can Tho City and Hau Giang Province.

Can Tho is a busy port capable of accommodating large ships from neighboring countries. Hau Giang or Hau River is the main channel that passes through Can Tho. The land mass surrounding the river was developed very early so the population in this area is probably the largest in all of the Delta region. The land here is said to be the most fertile because of the deposits from the various branches of the river.

Today, it has become centre of economy, culture, science and technology
