++ Danang Highlights
The Danang area was the center of the Cham Civilization for many centuries. The most ancient capital, Singhapura (Lion Citadel) at Tra Kieu, 40 km southwest of Danang city was built during the course of the 4th century. The ancient site of Singhapura with its dozens of monuments, hundreds of statues and bas-reliefs, attests to the rich culture of the kingdom which once flourished here. The sacred Buddhist-inspired site of Indrapura, now known as Dong Duong lies 60 km from Danang. The Site’s scattered monuments are engraved with texts about a line of nine kings and their deeds. Many artifacts have been discovered at this site.
The Holy Land of My Son is located at Duy Tan commune, Duy Xuyen district, Quang Nam province, 30km to the west of Tra Kieu and 69 km Southeast of Da Nang. This is an architectural complex of many Cham temples which is situated in a narrow valley surrounded by mountains.
The construction of My Son was likely to have been started in the 4th century. From the 7th to 14th century, it was supplemented the towers. The temple complex had more buildings and stupas constructed of varying sizes and became the main cultural vestige of the Champa dynasty in Vietnam. Its architecture is influenced by Indian style.
Aside from religious celebrations, which allowed the dynastic royals to spiritually connect with the gods, My Son was also a cultural and religious centre and was the burial place of kings and religious leaders. The holy land is centre of temples of Hindu gods in Asia and its unique heritage in Vietnam. It has been valued as equal to other famous historical relic of South Asia, such as those at Angkor (Cambodia), Pangan (Myanmar), Borotadui (Indonesia) and Ayutthaya (Thailand).
According to records on the stone stele, the first wooden temple to worship the Siva Bhadresvera genie has existed in 4th century. 2 centuries late, it was burned down in a big fire. The early 7th century, King Sambhevarman used brick to rebuild the temple towers which stands to this day.
The next king continued to renovate the older temples and built the news temples for worshipping the Gods. But baked brick and reliable materials were used to preserve the memory of this civilization and the construction techniques used by the Cham people remain to this day difficult to understand.
In 1999, My Son is designated a World’s heritage site UNESCO. My Son Sanctuary is a large complex of religious relics that comprises more than 70 architectural works. They include temples and towers that connect to each other with complicated red brick designs. The main component of the Cham architectural design is the tower, built to reflect the divinity of the king.
Ba Na Mountains- Nui Chua, 1.487 m high with a slope of 25 - 35oC is situated 40 km west of Danang’s city centre. The plant life here is diverse and the forest is always thick and green. The average temperature is 18oC - under 26oC in the hot season and under 20oC in the cold - with a range of 5.3oC between day and night which is so fresh and comfortable.
Accordingly in French colonial times Ba Na became a resort centre where visitors often to visit Nui Chua and Suoi Mo like Dalat and Sapa. It can be said that Ba Na is a natural zoo of great significance for scientific research and tourism.
Ba Na is also an ideal resort with its beautiful landscapes. From Ba Na peak one has a sweeping panoramic view. To the east is Danang with many beautiful buildings, the Han river quietly following by Ngu Hanh Son which looks like a rockery an the sand, the vast fields running to the valleys. To the west is the Truong Son range soaring to the Thu Bon river. To the north, behind the peak of Hai Van mount are the diminishing horizon, the sandy islets, the lagoons and the poetic city of Hue.
Ba Na feature is beautiful thick forests with deep green pine-covered hills. There is a characteristic point of the area that few others possess: the clouds in the zone reach the middle of the mountains, while the peaks are always clear. From the top one can admire a landscape of mountains, rivers, sky and sea.
The Marble Mountains, also called Ngu Hanh Son or Mountains of the Five Element, consist of five peaks : Thuy Son (water) which is the highest, Moc Son (wood), Kim Son (metal) , Tho Son (soil) and Hoa Son (fire). They are located 12 km west of Da Nang.
Thuy Son has developed into a popular tourist resort because of its alluring beauty. Stone steps carved into the mountain lead to Tam Thai Pagoda and Huyen Khong Cave.In the past, the pagoda paid tribute to Hindu and Buddhist gods and is now dedicated to Cham deities. Huyen Khong Cave was a base for Vietnamese revolutionaries during times of war.The Marble Mountains are famous for traditional practices of stone engraving. In Dong Hai Village, close to Thuy Son, 600 families chisel statues, jewellery and art works. Stone from Marble Mountains has been exported to many countries. One of the more popular beaches in Vietnam is located 2km from Danang, which is convenient for those visitor wishing to climb and swim.
The Non Nuoc Fine Arts Village has a three or four-hundred-year history. This is affirmed by some steles which still remain at some ancient pagodas in the Quang Nam Province. Currently, there is a temple of the “Marble Fine Arts Founders” at the well-known spot of the Five Marble Mountains, and many ancestor anniversary activities take place largely in this village on the sixth day of the first lunar month every year.
Many gardens of statues have their back to the mountains. So, the overall artistic spaces of these gardens are arranged skillfully thanks to the outside landscape. Visitors will be very interested in and surprised by the artistic stone works exhibited here. Polished, petite and sophisticated statues are presented with both traditional and modern motives and taken to parts of the world by visitors. Lifeless stone has become a lively thing with the human spirit through the craftsmen of the Non Nuoc Fine Arts Village. It is certain that this process takes place in many work stages, including extremely difficult ones. The happiness with the completed works, the admiration of connoisseurs and also the benefits from the job united the people of this fine arts village in their careers.
Hai Van Pass is located 1,500m above sea level. Its name means "pass of the ocean clouds", as the peak of the mountain is above cloud level while its foot is close to the sea. From the top of Hai Van Pass, one can admire Lang Co Beach to the north and Danang to the south. Endless forests stretch out west of the pass and the ocean is to the east.
Non Nuoc Beach runs for 5 km along the Marble Mountain in Da Nang. It is bordered by Dien Ngoc Sea to the south and Da Nang to the north. The beach gently slopes towards the calm, clear and blue ocean; the clarity of the water attracts people who come to swim and enjoy the seafood. The area is famous for seaweed, which is exported internationally. Many five-star hotels have been built in Non Nuoc to accommodate both domestic and foreign tourists.
The Dien Hai Citadel is located in Thach Thang Ward, Hai Chau District, Danang. It was formerly known as Dien Hai Fortress, built in 1813 in the twelfth year of Gia Long’s reign by Danang’s estuary. It was renamed in 1835, the fifteenth year of Minh Mang’s reign, after it was moved inland and rebuilt in brick on a high mount in 1823, the fourth year of Minh Mang’s reign. n 1847, the seventh year of Thieu Tri’s reign the perimeter of Dien Hai was expanded to 556m with a wall 5mhigh surrounded by a ditch 3m deep. The citadel was designed with two gates, the main one opening to the south and the magnanimous period of the city’s history. Dien Hai Citadel was classified as a national historical relic by the Ministry of Culture and Information on 16th November 1998 and a stele was permitted to be erected on 25th August 1998.
The government has approved a project to build an 8 km tunnel through the mountains to facilitate access to the area. other to the east. In side, there was Hanh Cung (the royal step-over place), Ky Dai (high flagpole platform), a storehofor food and ammunition and 30 large canon emplacements. The citadel was built in brick in the square Vauban style of architecture. Dien Hai Citadel, bearing the stamp of tradition of the struggle of Danang people and the nation in the persistent war against the French colonialists to protect national independence and territory, made an important contribution to the defeat of the French invaders in Danang in 1858-1860.
