Detailed Itinerary:

Depart from hotel at 08.30 AM and start our half day of  Hanoi Art Tours, first will stop over at the Museum of National Fine Arts. It has received many high ranking delegations of different countries, the Museum has sent many traveling thematic exhibitions to other nations to introduce to international friends the typical culture, heroic history of Vietnam. At the same time, it has linked local people with painting, photograph, and sculpture collections of international artists. The Museum has created chances for local art lovers to enjoy and learn about different fine arts school and tendencies of the world.

The Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts will be the first place we visit, as it houses the most complete and diverse collection of works by generations of Vietnamese artists. This includes professionally trained artists from the Indochina School of Fine Arts during the French colonial period in the 1930s, artists trained in modest art classes in the mountains of Northwest Vietnam during the nine-year resistance war, the generations of artists after the liberation of Hanoi in 1954, and later the artists who were also soldiers during the Vietnam War, continuing up to the reunification of the country in 1975.

The museum, with its professionally curated exhibition system, presents a comprehensive overview of the development of Vietnamese fine arts through valuable artworks and the greatest names in Vietnamese art history.

Through each floor, exhibition area, and artwork, you will gradually gain an overall understanding (perhaps not completely exhaustive), but based on our experience, it will provide you with sufficient foundational knowledge and insight into the development of Vietnamese fine arts across different generations, historical periods, and its continuation to the present day. 

Next will visit art studios and meet contemporary Vietnamese artists who are currently living and working in Hanoi. (To visit artists at their studios, we usually contact the artists in advance and confirm that they will be present at the studio and available to welcome guests at the time of your visit. Although the meeting schedule is confirmed, it remains flexible. The tour guide will provide you with the names of the artists to be visited prior to the trip).

Continue our visit at one of the biggest art galleries such as: Viet Fine arts or Green Palm or Apricot or Thang Long (just one of them).

Tour ends at 12.00 (Noon) and transfer back your hotel. (or you also can request to drop off at any fine local restaurant in town)

As artist Pham Luc is no longer in sufficient health to receive visitors and has been seriously ill for many years, we will no longer arrange meetings with him in our company’s “Hanoi Art Tours” itineraries starting from 2025.

Master artist Tran van Can - A renowned painter who also served as the principal of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts from 1954 onward.

This is also one of the museum’s representative artworks on the theme of the Vietnam War, portraying wives, mothers, and sisters who lost their husbands and loved ones during the war. Many families in North Vietnam whose sons joined the fighting shared the same memorial day to honor their beloved family members who never returned.

Hanoi artist - Ngo Thanh Nhan

Ngo Thanh Nhan, based in Hanoi, is an artist specializing in lacquer painting. He has participated in 14 exhibitions, including seven solo exhibitions. With more than 40 years of artistic creation, he won First Prize at the Hanoi Capital Fine Arts Exhibition in 1983 and received an award from the Vietnam Association of Visual Artists in 1992.

The artwork “Ha Long” (created in 2020). The artist spent three million VND on 24K gold for this 60 cm-long painting. Ngo Thanh Nhan uses boats as a metaphor for the journey of human life, conveying themes of sharing and solidarity in the face of hardships and challenges.

Vietnam Fine Arts from 20th century up to now

Fine Arts from 1925 to 1945

A new era in Vietnam's fine arts history started with the establishment of the Indochina Fine Arts College. Many painters and sculptors appeared in this period with their forte in different media and themes. Painting on silk, oil painting on canvas, printmaking and lacquer painting developed during this period. Genre paintings and portraits, in a naturalistic, yet lyrical style, romanticized rural life, the new pleasures of the city, and the beauty of women, while documenting both nuance and detail of a life soon to be eclipsed by the struggle for independence. The two major creative tendencies of romanticism and realism shaped the later development of modernism in Vietnamese art.

Fine Arts from 1945 to 1954

Created during nine years of resistance war against the French colonialists, a collection of sketches demonstrates a reorientation in artistic priorities and concepts. The fine arts of this period reflect the nation's struggle. Artists of the day abandoned the previous, romantic style to create vigorous, optimistic revolutionary works.  A resistance revolution art was formed and developed which has continued to the present. 

Fine Arts  from 1954 up to now

The paintings of this period are exhibited according to the media: lacquer, silk, oil and sculpture.

The lacquer collection, including hundreds of paintings, represents different periods and several generations of artists who contributed to develop new techniques and styles of an art both ancient and modern. This is one of the collections most treasured by the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum.

The silk paintings collection of the Museum represent an art that is distinctively Vietnamese. It has a subtle, minimalist, yet profound expression that particularly characterizes the  Eastern aesthetic.

The Museum's collection of oil paintings introduces artworks created after 1954. The works express pervasive emotions of the Vietnamese people during the American war, the aftermath and the building of a new life. Works produced in the 1980s have a new symbolic vocabulary of color and composition, using bright and expressive color. The artworks of the 1990s reveal an explosion of trends in modern art: realism, impressionism, expressionism, abstract art, surrealism and other styles.
