Meeting the physical and emotional needs of the 200 Duc Son Orphanage children is the job of 18 dedicated nuns. They are ably supported by 10 lay volunteers. Nha Su Thich Nu Minh Tu leads the team, aided by assistant head nun, Ni Su Lien Nhu.
Duc Son children have had a difficult start in life, but like kids everywhere, we have our hopes and dreams. For the younger children that might be a new toy or a special treat like ice cream. For the older members of the Duc Son community it is completing our education, getting a fulfilling job, and maybe one day marriage and a family of our own.
At The Duc Son orphanage there is an almost equal number of boys and girls. Unlike many orphanages, Duc Son accepts children from birth. About 20 children are under the age of 5, including 3 babies. It is usual in Vietnam for children to live with their parents until they get married. Most of Duc Son's residents don't leave until they are at least 20 years old. The orphanage makes sure that residents are capable of supporting themselves before allowing them to leave.

Hoi An Ancient Town is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Its buildings and its street plan reflect the influences, both indigenous and foreign, that have combined to produce this unique heritage site. Hoi An was a thriving international commercial port for Chinese, Dutch, French, Japanese, Portuguese and Arab traders. These people came primarily to trade in the high grade silk, which is still produced in the area, as well as ceramics.

DAY 8: CU CHI TUNNELS & SAIGON CITY 1DAY
This morning, we pick you up at your hotel and depart for cu chi tunnels. By 1965, 250 km of tunnels criss-crossed Cu Chi and surrounding areas -just across the Saigon River was the notorious guerrilla power base known as the IRON TRIANGLE.
The Cu Chi tunnels played a vital part in the American war in that they allowed the Viet Cong to control a large rural area only 30 to 40 km from Saigon. At its height, the tunnel system stretched from Saigon to the Cambodian border. The network, parts of which were several levels deep, included innumerable trap doors, specially constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centres and kitchens. Today the remaining tunnels have become a major tourist attraction giving the visitor a unique experience and feel of what underground life in the American War must have been like. The tunnels have been widened for our benefit (otherwise we would not be able to enter them!) For those interested there’s even the opportunity to fire off rounds from an AK47 or MK16 at the nearby rifle range.
Return back to Saigon for lunch, next will be visiting the Reunification Palace, war Museum, China Town and Notre Dame Cathedral. At early this afternoon, tour will be finished at your hotel at 5.00 PM. Overnight Saigon (B/L)
